Published since 1995 by Joint Venture Silicon Valley Network and distributed for free, the new 2011 Index of Silicon Valley reported bleak indicators and a gloomy outlook.
The event provided Valley insiders a moment to reflect on the economic storm, and the mood was darkly optimistic. A persistent phrase tossed out was the “new normal,” old Wall Street jargon describing a repressed economic environment. Growth is too slow to bring down the unemployment rate, and government intervenes to save a struggling private sector.

I have lived in the bay area for nearly 22 years, and I believe every year there is at least one report that PREDICTS a gloomy outlook for silicon valley. Wishful thinking by wannabe-SVs? SV is self-sustaining. As the national economy tanks under Republican control, SV tanks last and doesn't descend as far as the rest of the country. When an enlightened Democrat is in office, someone who understands the value of investing in what SV specializes in, the country thrives and SV rises faster than the country. Happens time and time again. As SV goes, so does the nation.

We are in an age where an extraordinary president must make progress despite the doomsday, negative GOP narrative. I don't believe that ridiculous narrative any more than I believed that Bush knew there were WMDs. It certainly is laughable when directed at liberal SV and San Jose.

Many outsiders always downgrade San Jose and SV. After all, they're trying to boost their own areas and they can only do this by painting the very desirable San Jose/SV with a negative brush. Many also slam the area because they're not qualified to make a living here. It's plain to see however that an area with such ideal weather, great educational institutions, an extraordinary quality of life, and enough technological juice to reign supreme as the high tech capital of the world, will remain as one of the premier areas to live in this country for quite some time.

Don't be sucked in by the ridiculous narrative that predicts otherwise.

SoCal does have CalTech. UCSD does really well in sciences though.

People in CA don't realize this, but UCSD is a REGIONALLY recognized good school. Cal and Stanford have educational powerhouse appeal NATIONALLY. Even UCLA isn't as well known for education nationally, as opposed to their sports programs.
