Florida wins. Florida has all types of beaches and more cities on the beach than any other state. It has the longest coast line behind Alaska. There are more cities than Miami Tampa and Jacksonville. There is also Pensacola, Panama City, Clear Water, St. Petersburg, Bradenton, Sarasota, Ft. Myers, Naples, Key West, Ft. Lauderdale, Boca Raton, West Palm Beach, Jupiter, Sebastian, Cocoa Beach, Daytona/New Smyrna Beach, St. Augustine Plus many smaller towns.
I think it is a toss up between Florida and California. There are some amazing beaches in Florida and I have only seen Tampa Bay\ St Petersburg, Miami\ South Beach. I hope some day to go to Key West, Palm Beach and some of the other great beach cities on the west side of the Florida peninsula. California also has great beach cities due to the beautiful scenic backdrop of mountains dropping down into the Pacific ocean. Here's a few photos:
San Francisco is no beach city despite it being on the Pacific Coast. Once you go North of Santa Barbara the water becomes to cold for swimming per most people's tastes. Not to say that some don't occasional brave the cold water in SF but it is defintely not popular for its beaches. Pretty much the same can said for Oakland.
Florida is your winner. Going north from Miami you have Ft Lauderdale, Boca Raton, Palm beach, Vero beach, Cocoa Beach, Daytona, St Augustine etc.
Not by going by my criteria. I said any beach city and any Major city by the coast.
I think Florida takes this one pretty easily here. Having two coastlines helps here.
I agree with you but I think having a unique Diverse Coasline is helps to right?.. I've been to Florida Miami, Tampa, and Orlando Its the same Flat though the sand is different. I like going there in the winter because the water is warm and it feels good. However summer in Florida is not refreshing to me that much. It's like 90 and a lot of humidity and the water itself is warm I don't feel cooled off. In California I feel refreshed because it gets like 110+ so one can go to the beach in cool water to get cooled off. I prefer a Diverse coastline not a simple flat on. Then I would know what to expect everywhere in Florida. No doubt California and Florida are the two runner ups.
I wouldn't say FL easily, at all. Cali is something serious. Cali just might take this.
If we're talking strictly about beach towns/cities, then it's Florida easily. At a certain point along CA's coast, the coastal towns/cities lack that typical beach culture due to decreases in average temperatures. If we're talking about coastal towns/cities, then I'd give it to California.
