I'm planning on moving to Cincy to finish doctoral study at UC in July. I need some advice on nice, affordable neighborhoods close to campus. I don't mind a short (20 mins or so) commute. I'd like to find a neighborhood of mid-twenties/early thirties single professionals and grad students, with at least 1 bd apt for $500-600 (a little higher may be manageable) that's also close to shopping, downtown activities, banking, health care, etc. Any advice or warnings are greatly appreciated! Thanks!

PS-I also have a medium-sized dog (Border Collie and Chocolate Lab mix). This doesn't seem like it will be much of a problem, but thought I should add it in case.

There aren't too many "young" neighborhoods in Cincy, but your best bet would be: The CUF area (Clifton, U Heights), Mt. Adams, Oakley, E. Walnut Hills, Downtown, Northside. All of those areas are 15 mins. or less from UC. You could also consider braving out Avondale, OTR or Evanston (I don't know much about you so I really wouldn't suggest those, but I know people who live in those areas and are fine with it) Those places are somewhat off the radar to alot of people, but they're really not THAT bad, and OTR and Avondale will be the next neighborhoods to make a resurgance. I hope you enjoy your time here in Cincy, if u have any other questions feel free to ask.

Thanks for your reply. Safety is definitely a factor. I'm a 25 y/o single woman. I like being able to take a walk and window shop and to have a pub close by with a young professional population. I don't want to live in a family neighborhood, but I don't want to live in really young college neighborhood, either. I've been looking at Hyde Park and the Gaslight District of Clifton. Looking for some place with a lil eclectic cultural flare...

Hello! I also a grad student moving to Cincinnati looking for aparments, been doing a lot of research and I think you will have a lot of luck in the Hyde Park, Mt. Lookout, Oakley, Clifton/Gaslight area. I have narrowed down my search to there and have the same needs as you. I found a great place right by some pubs/coffee shops in Hyde Park.

Thanks Melbel! Seems there are quite a few of us grad students looking for the same lifestyle and in the same areas. That's reassuring! I think I've narrowed down to Hyde Park and Gaslight/Clifton. Wanna see everything first though. Good luck with school!

You both definitely should add Northside to your neighborhood list. It's just across the Ludlow Ave viaduct from Clifton (lotsa bus service to UC), less expensive, and chock full o' funky stores and eating/drinking places.

These are all of the best choices for both you and the OP. Northside is not safe for a SF nor is OTR.

HP has a greater selection of apartments in the price range described, but Clifton Gaslight is also quite nice. In Clifton, the neighborhood goes from lovely to nightmare in about five blocks though, so don't compromise on location there.
