Does anyone know anything about this address/neighborhood:

6654 University Avenue, zip 60637.

I found the most beautiful, spacious apartment and the rent is only $1200. It is listed as in Hyde Park/south Shore. I know nothing about this area...is this too good to be true????!!!!!

Unless things have changed drastically in the past year I would not want to live down there. Hyde Park's charm falls off pretty quickly south of 59th and everything after 63rd is questionable. I drove up Cottage from 79th to 47th this weekend and it seems to be a little nicer than, say, 10 years ago... but $1200 can get a great apartment in a lot better areas than that.

Yep, everything fulflej said. I also drove around the area two weekends ago and 63rd is as far south as I'd go, for now.

Technically, the address is neither in Hyde Park or South Shore. That's Woodlawn, an area on the way up. Since Oakwood Cemetary is on 67th street, the address is in the last block before the cemetary. As stated, $1200 will rent you a nice apartment in many areas of the city. Woodlawn south of 63rd street has many new townhomes but is still a little shaky around 67th street for people unfamiliar with the area. Although there is a 67th street bus, transportation in the area is not good. No commuter train, el or bus to downtown. They tore down the el on 63rd street.

Actually, the 6600 block of University Avenue is only about a 10-minute walk or a very short bike ride to either the 63rd/Cottage Grove stop on the Green Line or the 63rd Street stop of the Metra Electric line...

All the replys are listed near 3 years ago, is the south shore neighborhood still the same?

This thread is about Woodlawn, not South Shore. South Shore has worsened in the last three years -- in contradistinction, Woodlawn has improved.
