I hope they rot in prison. This hit close to home, and although I knew it was a possibility, it felt too real hearing about this.
5 men were convicted of a plot to "destroy" the Sears Tower. They were originally from Haiti and the Dominican Republic and said that this could be bigger than 9/11. (This article doesn't say that, but I heard it onthe news.)

these guys are from my home town and i was living there when this happened so i followed it very closely. they were highly disorganized, had no bomb making experience of any kind and divulged this "plot" to anyone willing to listen. they tried to build themselves up to seem tough and militant but really they were just fool-hardy gloaters. As depressing as it is for me to admit it, I don't think the FBI would be abe to catch a well-trained and highly educated sleeper cell if they actually intended to cause bedlam on our soil.

I didn't realize this was old news - I have been out of the country for 10 years. It was new to me, so I guess it impacted me a lot.

it's not old news, the trial was postponed for a long time because the defense wanted a change of venue and one of the original perps (the 9th member) had his charges thrown out. The verdict was just released this week.

They strike me as a group of idiots, hardly an organized and serious terrorist threat. I've often felt this case bordered on the entrapment of the ignorant and disenfranchised. From what I gathered, they were never a serious threat against the US, but petty criminals simply look for money, and saying anything to get it.
