The owners of the Sears Tower are considering painting it silver and I have mixed emotions about this.

The black icon has towered out my window off and on for many years. Everywhere I move I seem to wind up with a view of it in the distance. I can envision it in silver, however, I can't imagine the Hancock anything but black.

The reasons seem logical. I don't think Chicagoans would like such a major change to the skyline though.

I'm kind of disgusted by how many people voted yes in the poll to paint the Sears Tower silver on website.

The reasons do seem logical. And I could see why they would think that silver might give the Sears Tower a newer, fresher look (and I am not sure I completely disagree with them). However, if the cost is $50 million, I doubt anything would ever happen.

Currently the black metal isn't painted--It's annodized aluminum (duranodic). You don't just paint over annodized aluminum. Also, the bronzed windows go with the black cladding. Replacing ALL of the windows would cost a fortune, and they've already been replacing them over the last ten years with ones that match the bronzed color. Bronze-tinted windows with silver metal would look more tacky than words can describe, and would be oh so Donald Trump.

ITA. The Sears Tower is kind of our emblem, It would be a shame to change it. The thought actually makes me sad - I'm looking at it now out my office window. (Now can I cry?)
