Does anyone know if the new Sox/IIT stop on the Rock Island line is a done deal? If so, what is the eta? It's a little hard to get consistent info googling.

This is a lifelong dream for me -- crossing the street and grabbing the train to see a ball game.

Blair Kamin touching on the topic
One Mies building on IIT campus can go; squat brick building isn't his best work, and preservationists need to fight other battles | The Skyline

Thanks for the post. Would be interesting for LK to chime in on the architectural/preservationist aspect of the debate.

I don't have any additional info to add. There was a considerable degree of debate on this proposal on those other urban forum sites (which will not be named!) Thanks VC!

I am curious though; whats your opinion?

At first I read Kamin's article and felt like he was being pretty sensible.

But Hello Beautiful now may have pushed me back in the other direction
Hello Beautiful!

I mean, he raises a good point. If the building dosent have to be demolished, who do so? If Metra can locate on the other side of the tracks, why not do that? Or integrate the building into the overall design?

I don't really have much of any opinion on this topic (at least I don't particularly trust any opinion I might have.) Haven't driven by the intersection in over ten years, so all I have to go by is the pictures on line. That being said, I'm not particularly impressed by the structure in question. Looks like a plain box with a plain wall of no particular merit, but maybe I'm just not educated enough about architecture to appreciate it. (I've never been particularly impressed by the aesthetics of Miesian architecture, but that's just me.)

If it cost millions to redesign the Metra stop/acquire new land to save the plain box, I wouldn't be in favor of it.

I just read that they broke ground yesterday and expect to finish in a year. This is a nice improvement to the south side.
