10 year anniversary approaching and looking an exceptional experience. Have experienced many places but want some input. I have followed the recommendations of such rags as Chicago Magazine and such, but ultimately believe they are less than objective
(or something more sinister) so any thoughts would be appreciated!

Wants include (in no particular order):
1. Ambience / views
2. Service (please, no attitude)
3. Excellent, creative food from Americana to any part of the world

Dislikes include:
1. over priced miniscule portions
2. ridiculous prices (e.g., "16" at Chicago Trump-I'm willing to pay $$$, but it should be worth it)
3. Tables too close so peoples buttocks are in my eyeballs

Any suggestions??

I can't say that I have been to an insane amount of fine dining establishments in the city yet, but I have to say my favorite has been Spiaggia. It's a great location with nice views overlooking Michigan Avenue and the ambience inside of the restaurant is also very soothing and relaxing. I found the service to be wonderful which was a plus. I'm younger and I tend to expect waitstaff to be a little less attentive or helpful with me because of that. And the food really speaks for itself in my opinion.

NoMi has great views and an outdoor terrace. And the ambiance is quite nice (though somewhat modern). The prices are high, but nothing like Charlie Trotters or Tru. I'm not sure what you mean by "attitude" with the service. If you want waiters who know nothing about food and wine, go to some crappy steak house or something.

Yea, agree on Spiaggia. Last time I went the set dinner was around $160 each, but it worth it.

They have a Spiaggia Cafe next to it which is for general casual eating and they are good too, but probably not for anniversary.

Another place I'll recommend is Cite, it's near navy pier and they got great view plus the food is not bad.

I second NoMi as well... On weekends they have an excellent brunch buffet/table service that is not that expensive

I'd go for Alinea. Pricey (easily $150 each), but very creative American-based food and surely one of the best restaurants in the whole country. It's all about "miniscule portions", but you get to choose from one menu with a zillion different mini portions and another one with about 3 zillion of them. For an upscale place I found their service to be pleasantly un-starchy.

For something a little different and off the beaten path, check out Arun's (http://www.arunsthai.com/home.htm - broken link), one of the most renowned Thai restaurants in the U.S.
