Is it safe around wabash and 23rd street?

There are some new townhome development over there but I'm not sure if it is a good area to invest the money.

According to Crimes › 8 blocks around 2301-2399 S. Wabash Ave. | EveryBlock Chicago (http://chicago.everyblock.com/crime/streets/wabash-ave/2301-2399s/8-blocks - broken link) no, it is not safe. For example there was a carjacking on 24th and Wabash on April 26th, 2009. Within shouting distance of the corner, there have been 4 burglaries in the last year:

The website allows you to confine it to one block, there were nine burglaries within one block in two years.

Compare it with five intersections around the city.
63rd and Kenwood, 4 in the last two years.
Bryn Mawr and Austin, 0
Roscoe and Hoyne, 4
Altgeld and Tripp, 14
91st and Jeffery, 4

This map is instructive:

This is the Google Street View one block to the west:
2301 S State Ave, Chicago, Cook, Illinois 60616 - Google Maps
which should explain the source of the danger.

I personally feel safer north of 18th Street in the so-called "South Loop". But I think 23rd and Wabash has a pretty good chance of improving in the future. The problem is that there are CHA projects a block away on State.

It's not a good enough area where you would move there without doing some serious analysis first. Best thing is to take a walk around the area on a summer evening and see how you feel. Everyone has a different level of tolerance.

I personally would stay north of Cermak. That's just me, though. I have kids.

They're trying to pretend that they are still part of the "South Loop", and fail to see the difference between their place and another place five blocks north. But the projects south of 18th street change everything.

Yup. I live at 14th and Michigan and things get dicier as you go south and west. I wouldn't feel secure at 23rd and Wabash. Maybe the area will improve but the econmy isn't helping and I sometimes think the supply of people who want to move into the city is finite and there are many areas competing for such people.
