I agree. They tried.

Implementing a fee for driving in central Chicago (akin to what London does) seems overly complex and cumbersome. Simply raising parking rates in the central city would have the same effect without having to install thousands of cameras (again like the city of London did.)

I think a better strategy is to make public transit MORE convenient instead of making driving less convenient. Perhaps a combination of positive and negative incentives could be used, but when you ONLY have negative incentives for driving, but still have a terrible public transportation system, the net effect is strangulation of the city. And I for one am sick of getting nickled and dimed to death by the idiots in our city and county government. It's time for some MAJOR budget cuts, and end to TIFs, and a re-evaluation of our tax system. I have no problem paying higher taxes if we get good services in return, but our level of city services is actually getting worse while our taxes and fees are raised. This is unacceptable.

Totally! I would not be driving if the public transit system in chicago is on the same level as NYC, i.e., 24 hrs a day, highly efficient, and if you live in manhattan, you never have to walk more than .5 mile to get to a subway station. In fact, I never owned a car when I lived near central park in manhattan for two years. If you dont own a car and want to do 2 am grocery shopping or coffee in certain parts of the city, you are out of luck.

It is not fun waiting 30-40 minutes in the cold when you should not have had (according to the "schedule") to wait more than 15 min. In the meantime there are three buses bunched up going in the opposite direction you are going in.

This crap had been going on since I was a wee little buck.
you ALWAYS seem to have problems with the Addison bus. it's always there within 5 or so minutes for me.

it just must not like you!

and yeah, what someone else said about the bunching ... there'd be a lot less if there weren't a bunch of crazy drivers in the way.

The MTA has much greater funding support than the CTA. Theoretically, the extra money raised by increased parking fees could be funneled to the CTA to increase the level of service provided. Of course it won't work that way in real life. I think one of the biggest failing of Mayor Daley is his lack of appreciation for the importance of good transit for a well-functioning, desirable urban environment.

Also, if anyone has noticed lately, more than likely the NYC system will be facing HUGE HUGE service cuts ... they are more than $1 billion in the hole, and there has been talk about shutting down two subway lines entirely.

All i can say is that corporate greed has taken over chicago. I wish there was still a tiny little humane side of the society left.
