I think it is an old idea of what a city center should be, and, or, a different idea of what a city center should be.

Like Cleveland for example they have a little theater district with all of the lights and it feels like a miniature Times Square. Is it comparable? Of course not, not in any meaningful way. But it is interesting.

LA has a cool downtown area, but it is just another area it is not the focus of the city. Atlanta is the same way. Some cities, uptown or midtown is more built up than downtown.

People often forget that Manhattan was New York, once upon a time. Then comes Brooklyn which was its own city at the time and then come the counties that make up the other boroughs. So there is a reason for a Times Square.

Cleveland's Time Square is absolutely Public Square. Chicago doesn't have a clearly defined one (in an alternate earth it would have been Halsted/Congress), but Millennium Park is as close as it gets. And LA really doesn't have anything close. Maybe... the Hollywood Walk of Fame?

If Chicago had a Times Square (thank god it doesn't), it would be the intersection of State and Lake.
