I don't think Poles have any universal prejudice against latinos. I'm sure some do, but given that 25% of Chicago is latino and there is a lot of overlap between latino and Polish population locations in Chicago I'd be shocked if there was any universal prejudice. The smaller the store, the more likely you are to be followed around no matter what you look like, and if you're *young*, you often will be followed around just for that reason. (P.S. I was born in Boise, my mom grew up in Caldwell, and my parents live in Middleton, Idaho).

I mean, in some of the large Polish supermarkets they stock both Polish food and Mexican ingredients. Not just fresh stuff, either, check out this imported-from-Poland jar of "Mexican" vegetables. I have a pretty strong suspicion that Mexico enjoys more fame in Poland by way of Chicago Poles than even directly from Mexico.

As a white dude living in Jeff Park, I can tell you that Poles aren't outright racist, they're just very insular around here. If given the opportunity, they'll only do business and day-to-day activities with other Poles. But, that's how life works with any type of foreigner.

And we know racism isn't the correct word for these situations, it's xenophobic.

So if blacks or Mexicans only want to do business with their own kind they're insular?

I'm not trying to put words in your mouth but, it does sound a bit off.

From my experiences Polish people are less friendly than some other Eastern Europeans. I have had Romanians,Serbians,Albanians as neighbors and they were all much friendlier than polish. The Polish were good neighbors and took care of there homes, they just were not friendly.

Well, yes. By definition, insular relates to creating an island, so they would have an island-like mentality.

Something tells me if Blacks or Mexicans did that it would be called something else.

If you present yourself in a respectable way then there shouldn't be a problem.
...pretty judgmental and victim-blaming. "...shouldn't be a problem" - yeah, for sure there shouldn't be a problem in general but you need to leave a lot of room for the cases where even "respectable" looking people are discriminated against.

Blame the perpetrators not the receivers of discrimination.
