I have a friend who is moving to Chicago in 2008. He wants to go to college and has narrowed it down to two -- DePaul and Northwestern.

We are thinking about living in the Lincoln Park/Lakeview area.

Questions:
1. Which one is better? Why?
2.Is our neighborhood of choice good for any of these two universities?

Thanks in advance!

Northwestern, hands down. It is one of the best schools in Chicago (well in Evanston actually). This shouldn't even be a question (I'm assuming DePaul is his or her 'safe school').

DePaul is fine in its own right, but not nearly as respected as Northwestern. It is in Lincoln Park and Northwestern is in the suburb of Evanston just north of the city. Both are accessible by public transportation, however, if I were planning on attending Northwestern I'd live further north.

If he gets into Northwestern, hands down, Northwestern. It is really highly ranked and well known. DePaul isn't bad, but Northwestern is leaps and bounds above it.
He can live in Lincoln Park or Lakeview if he goes to DePaul, but Northwestern is in Evanston, so those are not good neighborhood choices for Northwestern. Also, if he's a freshman there are probably rules about where he needs to live the first year.

Rules to where he can live? I have never heard of such except in some of these weird christian colleges. But I will take your word for it!

Getting to Northwestern is easy if you live close enough to the Red Line. You can get on the Purple Line Express at Belmont or Wellington (Lakeview),Fullerton or Armitage (Lincoln Park) and get off at the Foster stop in Evanston. It is very quick even with the construction. The only downside is the Purple lines schedule, the Purple Line Express does not run on Saturday or Sunday. You would have to take the local Red Line service and transfer to the Purple Line at Howard.(Which takes much longer)

Keep reading for more info from others...There are also some threads that cover Lake Voew and Lincoln Park pretty well.

Evanston is kinda limited with bar choices. Once someone gets tired of that they all go to Lincoln Park and Lake View to party anyway. Except for the campus,Evanston is pretty much a sleepy town.

Some schools require that people live on campus there first year, etc. I would probably want to live on campus my first year anyway!

Northwestern is bat far one of the best schools in the country. DePaul is a decent school but comparing DePaul to Northwestern is like comparing a Chevy to a Lexus.

It's not uncommon for universities to require freshmen to live on-campus. The school I went to (a public university by the way, not a "weird Christian school") required it of freshmen and sophomores.

Anyway, Lincoln Park/Lakeview isn't a terrible choice for a Northwestern student, just not necessarily the most convenient choice. Public transportation links the Lincoln Park/Lakeview and Northwestern campus areas quite conveniently; the main issue is that your commute would be close to an hour each way.

UIC would be a Pontiac, and City Colleges a Yugo (not that I am slamming them because they do serve as a "second chance" for people who need them)
