It's a mostly safe area, but my female friend was robbed at gun,point in front of the mcdonalds last summer, so things can happen. Just be aware of your surroundings...

That McDonalds is the source of 99.9% of the trouble around that area. Went to law school right there and I'm pretty sure that the park attached to the McDonalds is permanently closed because the idiots that spend their whole day hanging out there were smoking weed (amongst other things) 24/7 in that park.

You'll be fine. I live near State & Oak. Like many have already pointed out pretty much the entire near north side area have heavy police presence and heavy pedestrian traffic. Even in the wee hours with very little pedestrian traffic there's enough vehicular traffic that you'll be fine. I had to walk to to the station to get to the airport several times at very early mornings (4am) and never had any problem.
