Lake Michigan is an excellent source of drinking water and is very safe. The Jardine water purification plant is the largest capacity plant in the world and can be read about on line.
Jardine Water Purification Plant - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia . Do not hesitate to drink the water. Its better cold or iced, and its better in winter months where it comes colder out of the faucet and does not have any hint of taste from blue green algae. Been drinking it all my life.

And if you are worried about the pipes in your building degrading the water quality, there are cheaper alternatives to bottled water. A water filter over the faucet, or a pitcher like Brita makes, may be all you need(If you need anything at all)
