West of I94 it's very family oriented but very very nice area, but a little more suburban. East of that its denser and a bit more urban. I would suggest east of Kedzie as there are some pretty good bars and restaurants. Now Irving Park is not a lively hot spot for nightlife, if anything it's more low key. Now I wouldn't live off Irving Park Rd. though. Irving Park Rd is notorious for bad traffic between California and Cicero. I would say you should live off of Addison or even better Belmont. Tbh Belmont between Kedzie and California is really up and coming and very convenient. You are only a10 minute drive from Lakeview, Lincoln Park and Wicker Park/Bucktown, and 5 minutes from Logan Square. You are also right on the expressway and near the Blue Line. Also a young crowd is really starting to move in.

Irving Park is a good option but I think Avondale or Logan Square are more interesting, convenient and more what you are looking for.

I know, that's why I suggested North Center. Then OP could be within 30 minutes of work AND easy access to a lot of nice restaurants and nightlife in Lincoln Park and Lake View.

Agree with you that Irving Park even though relatively quiet is a good neighborhood. Bang for your buck, considering time, Avondale and Logan Square would be great options too.
