Looks like the 10K number is way off.

This says 2,500 in 1990. More accurate than wiki.

Sadly could very well be less than 500, though that wouldn't seem anywhere near enough to support the churches and Ukrainian businesses in the area.

I do know at least one first-generation Ukrainian family who lives over there.

Ukrainian Village

I do know that Ukrainians are very loyal and will support the churches. What is upsetting
is the possibility of a unique culture and neighborhood fading away and turning completely
around to another Wicker Park or Bucktown.

Pretty much inevitable. Most neighborhoods in the city have turned over multiple times. Hopefully a few vestiges remain, like a few bakeries and restaurants. (Although I think there are only a few there now.) On at least some of that strip of Chicago, though, most of the signs are in Ukrainian, and that must be for more than just nostolgia. That's why I'm surprised the numbers are in fact so low.

To answer your other questions, i doubt there are a great deal of Poles left in West Town. Probably a handful of old people. There are probably more ethnically Polish transplants who have moved there from the burbs, etc., than natives these days. Most of them migrated northwest a long time ago.

But, to illustrate my earlier point, before it was Polish it was German and Scandinavian. So, c'est la vie.

I counted 17 the first time, but when I counted again to double-check I got 16, so now I have to do it a third time for a tie-breaker. It would be easier if they would stand still.

You need to go outside and have some samples of Easter Babka in order to get an
accurate count of Ukrainians.

There are still plenty of Ukrainian businesses and people on Chicago Avenue. The neighborhood isn't what it used to be but Ukrainians are still a solid presence.
