If 80% of the student population is "brown" then you'd think probably 80% of the schools are going to be majority "brown". I don't have an idea of what this comparison would look like but it would be interesting if say white student population is 8% but 20% of CPS schools are majority white, you could look at that data and probably say it isn't equitable. Or maybe even class size after the closure happens will be interesting to analysis.

Got it. I'm sure the answer is out there, just don't know where to find it.

Chicago Public Schools' Racist School Closings

Quote:
Nine out of ten of the Chicago Public School students potentially affected by school closings this year are black, a Chicago Sun-Times analysis has found, a discovery one community activist called a “lawsuit waiting to happen.”

Of those 129 schools located mostly on the South and West sides, 117 are majority black. And 119 of them have a percentage of black students higher than the district average. At the 129 schools on CPS CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett’s list of schools that could be closed this year, 88 percent of the students are black.

Schools with at least 90 percent black students account for 103 of the 129. Just nine are majority Hispanic.

There are no schools closing on the north side at all. Since most of these schools are in black neighborhoods, I am sure that black kids are disproportionately affected.

The argument is probably going to be that none of the schools in white neighborhoods are under-performers or underutilized, which is a given considering the disparity in funding. I'm for closing schools if they aren't needed and are underutilized I'd just hope they'd do it in an equitable way and ensure the kids have safe routes to school. Some of these kids are afraid to even make their journey to school now there schools are even further....

There are schools on the north side closing according to the map. I know Trumbull in Edgewater is closing (Trumbull has a large special ed population which accounts for the underutilization as IL standards require fewer kids per classroom than used in the CPS calculation). And they are closing Courtenay and combining it into the Stockton building.

One of the big things is that there is a lack of strong attention in certain crime ridden neighborhoods.
