Hi everyone,

I love these forums for being such a valuable resource for the community (and those relocating there) Can anyone speak about the safety regarding the area around Stroger Hospital/Rush Hospital district? Walking around there? Esp individuals who work there? My family is considering on moving there for my husband's job and we plan on likely living in the suburbs while he commutes by use of public transportation (most of his hours will be around from 7AM till 7PM) and rarely later. Yes, he's a guy and he's going to put on a front about being able to handle himself, but I have a young daughter at home and after hearing the horror stories from people who've moved from Chicago I'm paralyzed with fear and don't want to take the leap if it means a considerable safety risk. Any advice/input/insight?

Thanks.

There's tons of people at all hours of the day and night in the vicinity of Stroger Hospital (including lots of cops). Its probably one of the safer parts of town. Unless you have a fear/aversion to urban areas in general, it should be fine.

Paralyzed with fear?? I think the hype is way blown out of proportion for your average citizen than reality. Don't join a streetgang on the west and south sides and stay away from openly participating in the drug market and your chances of being a victim of a violent crime drop GREATLY.

You're fine around those hospitals. You're fine on the trains. You're fine in almost all parts of the city that you're going to be visiting.

Maybe she is from out in the sticks and has no experience with urban living. If all you know about Chicago s media reports, you'd probably be freaked out too.

Allow him to carry a knife of legal length? I knew several who did that......and never used it AFAIK, just used it to stab random things like pop cans and to play with things/cut things open etc

Don't be. It's a medical campus that is essentially an extension of the UIC campus. College students, med students, and people who work at the hospital live around there, among others, and it's right on two el lines and the Ike. I wouldn't wander too far west of Western around there at night time, but that's nearly a mile away, and there'd be no reason that he would need to do that.

"...and after hearing the horror stories from people who've moved from Chicago..."

Are you referring to the Bears or Cubs?
