Quick question:

I don't have an established doctor in the city at this point, but need an x-ray to determine if I have a hairline fracture (or something) in my leg.

Is there anywhere I can go to get said x-ray done without needing to make an appointment weeks in advance, and that won't cost me an arm and a leg like an ER visit would?

Thanks in advance.

There is one of these places off of the Chicago Blue line stop. Cheap, but not for the faint of heart.

Its clean, well-lit - we call it the Hipster Hospital, due to the number of Ukrainian Village and Wicker Park residents that don't have health insurance it has patched up.

But, if its your first time at an urgent care clinic in an urban area, it can come as a shock, based on prior medical experiences in America. There could be a long wait, there could be zero wait. You could be surrounded by a mess of coughing fits.

Here are some reviews. People's expectations differ greatly:

Thanks for the recommendation; I've been to a number of urgent care/clinic facilities, so I don't think the experience will come as a shock.

Good...and good luck on the leg. How'd you hurt it?

Most larger medical facilites have this equipment on site
and wont cost as much as the trip into the ER.
Just google clinics in your area and call them
if they do not have the equipment
have them give you a referral
better to get it looked at than wait until it gets worse

Don't go to Concentra. That place is shoddy and suspect.

I did end up going to Concentra. A brief review:

Extremely clean facility (Chicago Ave location), very large, very well-lit and well-maintained. Staff mostly seemed either borderline competent or like they just didn't give a **** at all. Lots of hispanic employees, most looked younger than myself (25). Doctor herself was very friendly and seemed knowledgable, but also seemed very busy and like she had better things to do (par for the course for any doctor, really, I think).

Overall, not a terrible experience. Almost no wait time, and they do take insurance, so the whole trip was only $20. I'd go there again.

Thanks again to slow nerve for the recommendation.

Oh, and as for my leg: went ziplining with the girlfriend at Lake Geneva this weekend; yes, during the weird, random snow/sleet storm. On one of the longest runs, couldn't slow myself down properly and slammed into the ending tree foot-first. Achilles tendon/heel/shin had been feeling weird since then, hence the hospital trip.

.
20 bucks? WTF I had to get an X ray for my knee a month or so ago and the bill was over a grand after everything (pre insurance).
