One of the things I love aout Chicago is you have a lot of options for great food for cheap. So what are some of those cheap eateries that keep you coming back for more?

For me:

Hot Dougs.

Sultan's Market.

And Smoque BBQ. (yah I know a sandwich is like $6, no prob).

It's not $5, but I love some of the $9.99 all you can eat Indian Buffets on Devon and around there. You could be full for a whole day on that. For how much food you can get, I consider that in the same realm.

No chance for $5 at Hot Doug's or Smoque.

LOL, Yes you can eat at Hot Doug's for $5. Every non specialty item on their menu is under $4 (Well, there's one $4 item). The Chicago dog is $2, so really you could get 2 hot dog's for under $5 there.

In that case though, there's a lot of hot dog places like that in the city.

A half pulled pork sandwich at Smoque is $4.95 too.

Without a doubt NhuLan's or Ba Le (even though they upped their prices). I've stocked up on a weekend's worth of grub for <$15 before.

Not long ago I went to the Nhu Lan's on Belmont off Broadway, at the time not realizing they had other locations, was disappointed they didn't have everything that was printed on their takeout menu, didn't want subs or soup or smoothies, so I ended up getting a veggie egg roll and two meat pies. Cost me north of $8 after tax, and when I was finished I felt like I'd only had a snack, not a real meal. Oh well, live and learn.

Default Best places to eat for $5!

Art of Pizza, 3033 N. Ashland (I learned about the place via Drover and others on this forum -- thank you!).

Very large and filling stuffed pizza slices, $3.42 each plus tax.

If you want pasta instead of pizza, pay attention to their daily specials. Some very good deals there. For example, on Sundays they have spaghetti and meatballs for $4.95 plus tax. On Fridays, it's baked mostaccioli (with meat sauce and tons of melted cheese), $5.25 plus tax. Portions are generous and also come with a good-sized garden salad, and chicken noodle soup, and bread and butter. I'm a hefty eater, and it's almost too much food for me! One of the best deals I've found in my general part of town.

A Chicago dog or two at any decent hot dog stand.

A couple of $2 tacos (with free chips and salsa) at any number of Pilsen taquerias.
