Yeah, you're right. The education of our youth is totally overrated as a priority. My bad.

Let's be honest here....while teaching is a noble, needed and important profession, don't act like teaching is on par with being a doctor or something like that.
And, if it were so important and the teachers were doing such a great job, why do students in the CPS do so poorly on their exams?
Again, teaching is important, but they're not curing cancer.

Look up the stats on the % of low income and english learners for cps, then compare to your favorite good school district.

I could not possibly disagree with those who don't think teaching is one of the most important jobs out there. Just look into how much we spend on a person who ends up living on the government's dime whether it be through welfare programs or incarceration. A great teacher can save untold millions by giving a kid a chance to succeed.

Social workers do a lot, too.

Mothers are more important than either, and I've never seen them go on strike. For them, it really is about the children and not just lip service.

Nobody said that.

Since you're into the doctor comparison, this is the equivalent of asking, "If it were so important and the doctors were doing such a great job, why do patients who are shot in the head do so poorly at recovering?"

I can make excuses all day about why I might not succeed at my job (sales). It can be anything from 'my product sucks' to 'customer has no money' to everything inbetween. But the fact remains, I need to sell in order to keep my job. I'm not 'protected' by a union if I fail to sell.

I acknowledge the fact that a lot of kids come from backgrounds that makes it harder for them to focus on school, but isn't that a large part of a teachers job, to find a way to reach the non-ideal students? To get them engaged and want to learn?

That's like saying "it's easy to coach a team with Michael Jordan on it" But that's what makes a great coach, winning with team that doesn't have Michael Jordan.

We're not talking about non-Michael Jordans here. We're talking about players who aren't even remotely prepared to be in the NBA. If Phil Jackson coached a team of short, chubby, middle-aged white guys who failed to win against the Thunder or Heat, would your instinct be to blame his coaching? Or would you suspect that he probably did the best he could with what he had?

I've met and have heard about quite a few mothers who not only go on strike but quit.
