Ive been noticing everytime I wake up in the morning, I hear on the news "12 People shot" or "13 injured in gunfire last night". Now, I lived in the city(The Projects) for most of my childhood and early teens so I know about the gangs and stuff but how do we put a end to this madness on the streets? It really pisses me off when I see 20 officers guarding Rahm Emanuel or 1000 officers at a protest where officers outnumbered protestors 30 to 1. What can be done about this, so that more innocents wont die?

You grew up in the projects, you tell me.

The neighbors have to take the neighborhood back and parents take responsibility for their kids.

If that doesn't work, there's always church.

As someone who was interviewed put it....the leaders of some gangs were arrested. It makes sense when you think about it.

If it hasn't ended in this point in time [I mean come on! It's the 2010s!] I doubt it'll end soon.

This is exactly what I said on Facebook and on City Data. But no, I was assured that there was no connection between the two. And people living in south and west side ghettos should only be angry that protesters are blocking their route to get home.

You want a blunt answer? You and others are gonna have to start "snitching." The police can't solve any crimes if nobody cooperates with them. Granted, you can't "keep it real" if you snitch, but you know, keepin' it real, in all its various forms, is the primary reason why the quality of life in rough neighborhoods never improves. It's nothing more than being a rebel without a cause.

The OP is an elementary school teacher who lives and works in the far south suburbs. Cut the rudeness. There is really no point in being so confrontational towards him or her.

There are Wicker Park hipsters that are originally from affluent suburbs. And yet you prabobly wouldn't treat them like a representative of Naperville.

Thank you, OP, for teaching kids in my area.

I don't think there was any problem with the two replies. I thought they were right on point.
If someone grew up in the hood, who better to know how to fix the hood?

I do know that police presence isn't the problem. Cops can't be everywhere at once and when it only takes 3 seconds to commit a driveby shooting, and then nobody will cooperate, what do you want the cops to do?

At a certain point, the problem is the community, not law enforcement. Unless you want marshall law imposed.
