I pay $1200/mo for my 1bed and indoor parking is an extra $150. So yeah, it can be done. It's pushing it, but not out of the question.

Old Town is basically as pricey as River North, but the building stock is pretty different so it's hard to do apples-to-apples comparisons. For example, it's hard to directly compare a luxury highrise unit a couple blocks from Michigan Avenue with the upper unit of a heavily updated vintage two-flat with refinished but original details a couple blocks from the park. They're both great and they could very well rent for the same price, but they're great in totally different ways.

The West Loop now has a brand new "L" station at Morgan and Lake, which really improves rail access to the north part of the West Loop. It's basically less than a 5 minute walk from Moto and Next Le Sardine and Sushi Wabi and the Publican and Lumen , etc, etc. The West Loop is also well-served by east-west bus lines, as well as the Halsted bus to go north to Lincoln Park, etc. I'm not sure what rental pricing in the West Loop is, but the areas within an easy walk of that new Morgan stop have good access to food, some clubs, and then the rail line to connect to the Loop for transfers north.

On the southern part of the West Loop, you have both the Halsted and the Racine stops on the Blue Line. There's not really a lot going on over there, though, but it might be cheaper. The Blue Line would wisk you to the Loop or to Wicker Park/Bucktown with no transfers.

Another place you could consider is the Southport corridor, especially east of Southport where you're easy walking to most of Wrigleyville, or near Roscoe and Southport where you're close to the Brown Line and sort of equidistant to the area around Sheffield/Belmont and the eastern edge of Roscoe Village near Lincoln and Paulina and Belmont. Not as happening as River North, but things to do and plenty of people in your age bracket.

I may be going to the art festivities there tonight, so I guess I'll find out. I tend to associate West Loop with Oprah, new condos and overpriced restaurants, none of which I think of as hip, but this event appears to have promise.

So if I happen to not like Roscoe Village or Lincoln Square, maybe I should think about the southern part of Lakeview? Kind of want to be on the red line, but for sure not as far north as Andersonville...

My late 60s/early 70s parents live in Lincoln Park (part of the year), FWIW.

I think you should ask yourself if parking must be indoor or will you accept an outdoor space. I think that will open up far more options. Also why not Wicker park. Its young and hip with lots of nightlife and probably a little cheaper than lincoln park.

Sure, if you have a time machine to 1996. It's Lincoln Park Part II now.
