Difficult question especially in a large city.

UIC did a study of how our neighborhoods are perceived by different racial groups. Whites had more *blind spots* about neighborhoods than did blacks or latinos.

UIC Study Explores Racial Residential Segregation in Chicago : Chicagoist

Quote:
Researchers recommend that community leaders and policy makers give more attention to affirmative marketing policies and increase awareness of available housing options in other communities.
According to this letter in the Sun-Times, racial segregation in housing *is* decreasing, just not very rapidly

While at one level it is a "chicken and egg" problem (you can't jobs / investment in areas where no wants to work/shop/live , there are no stores/factories/offices/houses until someone investments in them...) that does really paint a sketchy map of how to change things: Get more reasons for people to go to some place that haven't...

The potential for the former South Works site to be such a magnet is not lost on many, but given the shakey history of both such MASSIVE projects AND the relative "cold shoulder" that has been given to the SE portion of Chicago for as long as it has existed, odds are not good that things will blossom anytime soon...

There is a reality about how difficult it is to shift people views towards so many things in the region that I have little reason to think that even a HUGE project that included traditional "draws" like "brand new single family housing with traditional lay outs and easy access to shopping, dinings, jobs and entertainment", some kind of major sports / entertainment venue, and even recreational options would overcome the patterns of more well off areas vs lower income areas. The other risk is that even in areas where no one would actually be "displaced" the traditional voting blocks that support the long time incumbants would be toppled by new comers so that aldermanic / state legislative power brokers who stand to lose will stand inthe way of any such wholesale redevelopement...

Segregation is a state of mind,Chicago's problem is a mixed bag. The city's segregation is based on race but also location.Downtown,North Side,West Side and the South Side are different and large, they have their character.Chicago being urban and compact, everything is convience. Each section I mentioned is large enough where a person doesn't have to venture out.Chicago is a old city, developed in a time where racism was at it's height. It's going to time, I think things are getting better.

I don't see that there is a problem. People are free to live anywhere they want as long as they can afford it. There are whites, blacks, Asians, and Hispanics in my neighborhood. If people choose to live in certain neighborhoods with others of their race, that is their right.

I like it the way it is now. I live at the 60640 zipcode and this is as much diversity as I like it

There's not a whole lot that can be done except for reducing crime and improving education. But in order for those things to happen, people need to stop seeing the city as a bunch of borders between the bad and the good. As chet said, it's a chicken and egg question.

Eliminating segregation just for the sake of eliminating segregation is probably not a worthwhile goal.

Nobody seems to really care to be honest. During the week we all work together in the loop, walking around in groups like the old school Benetton ads, but once 5pm hits, we all go back to our little bubbles. I commute from Indiana so it's even more blatant on the south shore train.

Any solutions have nothing to do with directly addressing racism at this point in history. It has everything to do with affordable housing, social services, and solid public schools.
