I think the OP should plan to hit Chicago early, before 2PM. And avoid I-94 into Chicago and take the Indiana tollway and the Skyway in; IME I-94 is always being worked on and can't be counted on to move smoothly, it might and it might not. But the tollway-skyway is almost always moving well even though there is some work going on.

One of the best places to stop along the way is the Confederate Cemetary in Hoover's Gap south of Murfreesboro Tennessee. In 1863 during the War of the Rebellion a small force of Illinoisans and Hoosiers held the pass against a far larger Confederate force. Some of Rebels killed in the fight were reburied in an old pioneer cemetary in which the pioneers had been buried under rock cairns, as though they were Iron Age chieftains back in Ireland or Scotland. One of the odder things I've seen.

The cemetary is right where you get off I-64 for Beech Grove, right next to the highway.

And yeah, Captain Eli Lily was THE Eli Lily.
Pretty cool. However, I-64 does not go through Tennessee. Did you mean TN State Rte 64?

Sorry, I meant I-24. The cemetary is at I-24 and TN. 64

I used to do a a lot of long distance driving. IMHO Best-Western has the better deals and better accommodations.

The times I have driven to Chicago from Atlanta, I have driven it straight through. If I'm by myself, I can do it in 10 - 11 hours. With the lady, it's more like 12- 12.5 hours since I can't do the NASCAR thing, run inside, use the restroom, and go to the Wendy's, Subway, or pick up at hot dog while the vehicle is filling up. Sitting down for a meal, and being forced to stop at an outlet along the way kills your time. My stopping points for gas and food are usually on the Murfreesboro side of Nashville Metro, and somewhere within a 20 - 30 mile radius of Indy. If going from Atlanta to Chicago and wanting to stay overnight en route, I would push it at least to the Indiana suburbs of Louisville. If going from Chicago to Atlanta, I would push it to somewhere between Bowling Green and Nashville. Either way, it leaves you with no more than 4 hours to complete your trip.

Yes I think this would be the best bet for that route.

Exactly, the sooner and farther you can get out of Atlanta the better.

I drove from Chicago to Miami and back for a medical rotation. I did not stop, took me about 21 hours though I was exhausted. If I had to stop, I would probably stop in Nashville since it looked like a great city. If not, Louisville looks awesome too. Just be aware, slow down before the bridge connecting Louisville and Indiana (Clark County?). There are patrols and what seems to be a speed trap pulling people over left and right. I know because I was doing the speed limit prior to entering Indiana and was caught doing 10mph over right when the bridge ended, though it was the speed limit up until the bridge.

I just drove from Chicago to Florida and back to Chicago. I stopped in Nashville both ways. Not a bad ride. About 8 hours to Nashviile from Chicago. Good luck.
