Personally, all the bigger units i've seen are full of *******s who never open their doors for anyone.

Spend time in the neighborhoods, pick one you like, with people you like, and you'll be very happy, with friendly neighbors maybe even, and you won't have to live in a crappy apartment building.
Ummm...where do you see that quote???? Please quote me accurately . But what I did say was I thought by living in a larger apt. building it would increase my chances of meeting more people. But after reading my fellow posters responses...that may not be the case.

Hi Locstarr.

I think at the root of this whole conversation is a pretty significant point. It seems like your confusion (and the irritated responses) have to do with the fact that you are trying to take something true about NYC and automatically translate it to Chicago. They are terribly different places, and trying to compare the two is apples and oranges. (Big apples? to... big oranges?)

So instead of trying to use what worked in NYC, maybe try what might just work in Chicago? Instead of going down the hall to meet people, go next door. More space that way anyway.

I think the reason why that may be is because the larger buildings tend to be in neighborhoods where this is a high degree of transience/residential turnover. Not much point investing the time to meet your neighbors when you and/or most of them won't be around in a year or two. I presently live in a more family-oriented neighborhoods about evenly split between single-family homes and two-flats. A lot of people have been here for 10 years or longer, and meeting people is a lot easier. The drawback (as others may see it anyway -- doesn't bother me) is that there aren't many people here my age and/or with similar interests to meet.
