My family and I are looking to buy a home for the long term in one of the northern suburbs. We have kids who will be starting school soon. We are white but a religious minority. Our priorities are good schools, having a multiicultural presence, closer to the city is better, lower taxes.

We could spend up to 1 mil, but would like to live below our means and spend 500-700k on a 4 br house. We have been considering Northbrook, Glenview, Deerfield, Wilmette. We are familiar with Highland Park and do not like it because it does not fulfill some of our criteria. Thanks!

Have you checked out Evanston? It would fit your request for multicultural and close to the city, good schools. Hard to find low taxes anywhere around the burbs though.

Default Northern Suburb

I have lived in Eastern Glenview for the last ten years and I love it. It would fulfill all of the qualities you are seeking. The taxes are relatively low compared to other northern suburbs. We are in The Avoca school district which is extremely multi-cultural and a top notch school district as well. Check it out, and you may find what you are looking for. Good Luck!

It may come as a shock to some, but successful people whose cultural heritage may be from India or Asia or ex-pats from Europe or even immigrant generations from the Caribbean or Africa do end up on the North Shore.
The mult-cultral background of parents is reflected in the FACT that the District includes links to translate their web pages into Korean, Russian, French, German, Portugese, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese and Arabic. History | Avoca School District 37
Often times they want the best public schools for their children and are willing to pay high prices in real estate to do so. Interactive Illinois Report Card

To better make recommendations:
-What activities are your kids into? Ex. hockey, violin ??
-What did you dislike about Highland Park, but like about the other towns mentioned?
-Are you limited to the North Shore or are you willing to be a little farther west?

If you want good schools and diversity I would go with Glenview and the Glenbrook South High School area.
