Looking for any suggestions on the best suburban schools for our 13 yr. old child who needs to be in a self-contained classroom, with severe physical and mental disabilities.

I've read many positive posts about Dist. 204/Naperville, but it seems they are all speaking about kids who are higher functioning than our son and are probably included in regular classrooms.

Do any of the Naperville H.S.'s have self-contained classrooms within them for more severely disabled children?

Any other towns/areas with programs similar to D204?

Thanks for any help?

I know that just about every District in the popular suburban districts have impressive abilities to accommodate children with special needs. I would suggest calling some and interviewing the various high schools:

Technically Naperville is a Community Unit District and may have a better coordinated offering than areas served with separate elementary and high schools districts:
General Information - Naperville Community Unit School District 203
Lisle is organized in a similar fashion:
Lisle Community School District 202 - Student Services
As is Elmhurst:

Good Luck!

Hi, check into the Worth school district in the SW suburbs. I was always impressed with the attitudes of the teachers, administrators and quality of the programs.

Contact the NSSED for the northern suburbs and SEDOL for the northwest suburbs:

Northern Suburban Special Education District

The Special Education District of Lake County

Also, when I was a kid (20 years ago), Maine East High School in Park Ridge had an entire section of the school specially built for special needs kids, including a gym with special equipment and scaled basketball court. My recollection was of a wide variety of disabled kids integrated into classes or helped by mainstream students in their special classrooms-- I had a couple of friends in motorized wheel chairs and there was a girl with severe cerebral palsy in one of my advanced classes.

Have no idea about the program or facilities now, but maybe Maine East and district 203 may be worth checking out.

My inlaws have a relative with a mild cognitive disability, and her parents have had a terrible time in Illinois. According to them, this state has a terrible track record in dealing with children with cognitive disabilities. If I had a child with these issues, I'd seriously think about leaving the state after hearing their stories.
