There’s a job opportunity for me in Hines, IL (about $40,000/year, living on my own). I don’t have any guns and am not planning on getting any. My vision of Chicago is a racially segregated, crime-filled, accidentally glance at a stranger and get shot kind of place. Are there any parts of the Chicago metro where that is unlikely (what are the safe neighborhoods that I can afford)?

I live in Chicago with my family. The only thing you have to do is not go to the bad areas of the city. The south and west sides are harsh, but sure, you can survive. I live in the NW side of Chicago and its fine. By the way, they have installed lots of cameras on the corners of the bad streets so if you see lots of those, then thats a bad area. Just look around...it is pretty segregated and the bad areas always look bad. Its really easy to tell. Btw, Chicago's downtown is very safe.

Btw, you could look for a place like...Sheridan Ave around the area where you get off lakeshore drive. safe area and quite nice. rent is like um..around 700 for you. Look at it this way, the closer you are to the North of Chicago downtown you are, the safer. hines is a western suburb. would you be wanting to live there or what? cause you said metro.

Yeah, I think Avenger said it best.

Where the hell are you from? Buzzard Gut, Oklahoma? I get that one can't be expected to really know a place until you've seen it yourself, but your vision of Chicago is so ludicrous as to be offensive and insulting.

You seriously envision the entire metro area as crime-filled? That you're going to get shot for looking at someone the wrong way while browsing the selection at La Mode Elegante in Winnetka? Ten million people make this place their home, ranging anywhere from trailer parks to 20 million dollar lake shore mansions. If you can't find your scene here, you can't find it anywhere.

I believe there are a number of those surviving in an area called "Boys Town". Not sure if that's quite what you're looking for, though.

I'm heterosexual (actually closer to asexual, I’m not interested in romantic or sexual relationships at this point in my life, maybe never. I think I would make a much more successful hermit than most other people).

I want to live as close to Hines, not Chicago, as possible but in as safe and as affordable of a neighborhood as possible.

If you are a Hermit move to a cave, if you want to move close to Hines move to Oak Park or North Riverside both pretty safe

No, its a total hell-hole here. Pretty much every white male has been killed already, so you'd stand out like a sore thumb.
