Hi,

I am looking to move to Evanston, and found a great apartment near Hinman and Keeney. However, I noticed that this is not too far away from some of the higher crime areas (Juneway Terrace, near Howard St., etc).

Does anyone know if Hinman and Keeney is safe area to live in, or does crime tend to spill over into this area? I will also most likely be taking the Metra or Purple line from the Main St. station, which is about a 0.5 mile walk. Are muggings a concern in this area of town?

Thanks for all your help!

Since no one else has responded, I'll take a stab at this, even though my experience is out of date. I lived in that area briefly in the 90s. It was very nice and quite safe as far as I could tell. The Juneway area is cut off by a large cemetery to the south, and I was not aware of any crime spillover from there. Nor were there any problems associated with the Main St. station.

Also, the last time I was in the area there seemed to be a lot of development going on (apts., etc), which generally bodes well.

Thanks very much Josef, it's nice to hear from someone who used to live right in that area.

The area was nice when we lived just a bit north of that area a little closer to Kedzie on Hinman avenue. I never felt unsafe walking around the area at all. I would not worry about muggings walking to and from the Main street stations especially if you are going during the day. I rode the purple and red lines even late at night and the Metra is even safer than the *el.*
