Renting is a good option, but relocating is what would be tough on the kids...

Far northern St. Charles will be about a 50 minute commute to O'Hare, but it'll split the difference between Sycamore and Hoffman Estates. The area has good schools so if school districts are important then St. Charles is probably your best bet.

Unfortunately Hoffman Estates and Sycamore aren't necessarily close to each other, and of the three areas you mentioned you're going to have a long commute regardless. If easy access to O'Hare is your biggest issue, then Hoffman Estates/Barrington is worth looking into

It would appear that access to Sycamore and O'Hare is quite the challenge. Thanks so much for all the great info so far.

What is South Elgin like, particularly the Thornwood neighborhood?

I have not been out to Thornwood in a loooong time but as I recall it is a nice area for folks accustomed to the largerr homes in twisty street subdivisions -- area that is served by St. Charles schools has good demand among folks trying to avoid U46 schools. There have been some foreclosures that really whacked equity. Property taxes are a huge concern -- some folks are paying nearly 3% of current market value per year and that can be really hard to sustain...

You might want to look at look at the unincorporated sections of St. Charles too -- the addresses typically have "fire number" look to 'em like 38W123 or 7N456 -- generally you avoid municipal property taxes and trade-off is pretty minor in areas that are kind of rural ...

We took a look-see trip last weekend and drove around Barrington, Geneva, and St. Charles. All 3 were lovely, Geneva being our favorite. Now the dilemma is an older home closer in, or newer further out? No easy answer there.

Am I missing any other towns/neighborhoods that are midway with good schools? Someone mentioned Park Ridge, but the commute out to Sycamore from there looked horrible.

I think you got the main sections covered pretty well -- I like to use the consumer facing web sites like redfin that allow you to specificy a school district to limit the search results as that way you get stuff that is important to you filtered out from the homes that are not in the districts you prefer.

You could not pay to commute between Sycamore and Park Ridge! Very very strained traffic...
