The Metra line that rolls through Mt. Prospects and DesPlaines, as well towns like Park Ridge and Arlington Heights is the UP-NW line. Service is not as speedy as some of the other line (like BNSF) but that is mostly due to the diagonal geographic path it follows, the odd middle platform which forces slowdowns and the large number of highly travel grade crossings. The towns it passes through are generally a bit larger but their train centric cores are attractive enough.
OK, getting off the subject, but I frequently transfer from one Metra line to another, and know a few others. The North Central service uses the Milwaukee West line for its final approach, so many transfer at River Grove to stations on that line. At Blue Island some transfer from the Rock Island to the Metra Electric, more convenient to Michigan Ave. Also some Cubs fans transfer at Evanston to the CTA.

Just because I love you pvande I ought to warn you that I am a total geek when it comes to reports issued by our many regional transit boards. My best friend is married to a gal who works for one and I have always find their planning fascinating. When I say "virtually no one" in the context of transfer I choose that as only SLIGHT hyperbole as I know that transfer ARE technically possible on a few train lines but they are of NO CONSEQUENCE to the VAST MAJORY of Metra commuters.

Look on pages 33 and 106-7 for data on how few "boardings" are recorded at the stations you cite -- http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...OAYzAg&cad=rja

ADA, huh? It would be interesting to learn just how many riders are able to roll from the 133 ADA platforms to the train in all types of wheel chairs?

It is a very popular myth that ADA really means the disabled is ambulatory and can use their hands to accomplish most tasks. False. Ninety-nine percent of public bathrooms do not meet or exceed ADA standards despite the pretty little picture on the door.
