Hi. I am a young professional moving from PA to Chicago, IL. I got tranferred out to IL for work in Lisle. I am wondering where are places I should look to live in the area? My boyfriend and I are young and would reallly like to live in the city, but I am unsure about the commute to Lisle. I have to be at work at 8am and usually leave around 6pm. I thought it might be helpful that I am going against the normal commute from the suburbs into the city, and I am doing the opposite. Can anyone PLEASE help me? I am moving in the next few weeks and am looking for a cool place to live. I can afford to live anywhere in Chicago, so that's not a problem.

PLEASE HELP! Thanks!

There is no such thing as a reverse commute from Chicago to Lisle, it's still going to be ugly, especially coming home. Figure 60-90 minutes each way.

there is a metra (commuter) train stop in Lisle, I don't know how far that is from your workplace but that may be an option.

Metra - Welcome to Metra

As mdz suggested, not only is there not a "reverse commute in Chicago" (both east and westbound are equally bad), but you are also traveling on one of the worst highways. I've had it take 2 hours some days, 4 hours if a wreck. Trust me, it's not plesant. Check out the metra! The only concern is how to get from the metra to you work. There are express trains that can get you there in 30 minutes from the loop in Chicago.

also one other question, which places are cool to live in and easiest to get to? my dad was suggesting living in naperville or oak park to make the commute easier, but are these cool/fun places to live for 2 young professionals right out of college

Downtown Naperville isn't bad and Oak Park is a reasonable commute into the city (for weekends, etc), but it depends on your version of cool/fun places. I don't prefer the suburbs, but there are a lot of people our age who love the burbs!
I would talk to your place of employment. There might be a PACE bus that goes by your work, or perhaps a shuttle.

Oak Park, Forest Park, and maybe Berwyn might be suitable for you. These are near west suburbs, with a very urban feel. They developed during the age of the streetcar, so tend to be relatively dense and walkable.

From Oak Park to Lisle is probably about 40 minutes and the drive back may take up to an hour. The key is to live close to I-290 so you minimize your time on surface streets. Going outbound in the morning usually isn't too bad. Coming back in the afternoon is always worse and you may find taking Roosevelt Rd or Cermak faster than I-290.

If there is transportation from the Metra station to your work, that would be even a better option.

Lofts in Naperville. They've got a great night life downtown! Bars/Restaurants are bustling. You'll love it. 10-15 min to Lisle.
