Like in MN after a few big storms the snow stays and never melts until spring.
Or is it like more in the Northeast where there's a big snow storm than after a week or so most of it melts?
It depends on what the weather is like at the time. If it's above freezing and raining, it'll melt the snow. If it's above freezing and not raining, the snow stays longer because there's ice underneath. January and February are the coldest months, and snow will fall, melt a little, and then be covered by new snow. There tend to be chunks of dirty ice sitting around from the snow-melt-snow-melt process. Those take the longest to thaw and disappear.

We did have a heavy snowstorm last winter, and that snow stuck around for a long time. It really just depends.

Typically, snow melts within a week of falling. Though lingering dirty piles can last a while.
