I like to be outside when possible reading or walking just to be outside. i am not a club type, more of teh hang out with a few close friends having dinner type I guess, lol.
Absolutely not-do not look into Rogers Park or anything east of I-94 (the Edens expressway) or south of I-90 (the Kennedy expressway.)

I will throw in downtown Park Ridge and the "downtown" area of the city neighborhood of Edison Park to look into. Both have a wide array of shops and things to do as well and are within 30 minute commute to work for sure.

I feel if you move into Edison Park or Park Ridge you will be quite happy.

Chet, is that the area around the Des Plaines Metra station? If it is, then while it is a good start, it is far from being a decent core.

Don't get me wrong, I like the area generally and I don't wish to give rise to offense, but there needs to be a whole lot more development around there to give it that city-like feel. The Arlington Heights development near its Metra station seems to have gotten the mix better, even if it is a tad smaller. I don't know quite how to put it, but Des Plaines still needs to work a bit on its core. This need for continued development and work is going to be a challenge in this economy, of course.

Sure, it is not as hip as some place in Wicker Park, but it is also probably a ten minute drive from any employer in DesPlaines. You can shop, eat, hang out in safety and comfort. In nice weather you can easily bicycle there.

Good Luck!

Des Plaines is not that bad. Since it appears you travel a lot, proximity to O'Hare is an advantage. Plenty of apartments in just about every price range. Warning: Don't go west of Wolf Rd if you can help it. There is a busy railroad running lots of long freights that runs north=south between Wolf and Mt Prospect Rd.
