How is public transportation in Charlotte and does it have a urban feeling about it? Can you get around well without a car?

Charlotte is a very suburban city - green, lush, treed - not at all gritty or urban. Oh, there are a few parts of the city that are older and a bit blighted, but you can live here for years without ever seeing those parts.

We have a pretty extensive bus system, though getting around without a car would greatly depend on where you chose to live.

Our public transportation system is rather inconvenient unless you live on a direct bus line. The southern portion of the city is better served by the light rail. However, getting around without a car would be difficult, to say the least. (unless you never left your particular area)

The OP posted the same question in the Austin TX and Denver CO forums, as well as starting a thread in a general forum on what cities compare favorably to NYC.

this^^

my gf lives somewhere in north charlotte, i think. its waaaay out in the middle of nowhere. farms and stuff are out there. i dunno if charlotte just picked that area up or if its always been a part of charlotte but yeah. no buses, no train, skateboard, nothing.

without a car its a wrap for a lot of areas in charlotte.

on areas with bus lines, its not so bad but its not the same as say a chicago, ny, dc.

i would never move to the south without a car.

It ain't very good, however I would rate it about acceptable for the size and density of the city... Most of the surrounding counties are pretty much hosed as they went on insane development sprees and funnel commuters into bottlenecks never designed to hold the amount of traffic pushed across on a daily basis.

However, I don't think you can hardly blame Meck / Charlotte for all that. Well, maybe not finishing the loop... but it seems that is going to be taken care of in the near future.

Hope you like walking and buses.
