Ideally you want to live on the side of town you are working on to take advantage of the bus line effectively. You can find many who have had similar questions as you in this thread https://www.city-data.com/forum/charl...portation.html

Default Public Transportation in Charlotte

Is it possible to live in the Charlotte area without a vehicle for a couple of months? I will not have a vehicle for the first 3 months after I move and I was wondering if there was a decent means of public transportation and if so; what areas in charlotte would be best to live in relation to access to public transit. thanks for your help!

It really depends on where you live & work, I did it for three months with no problem.

If you work downtown then you can take a bus to the Lynx Light Rail. It is nice which it should be for $500 million. It runs from I485 and South Blvd in to downtown. I am told the 9.6 mile commute takes about 30 minutes during rush hour. I have not ever taken the bus anywhere in Charlotte but from what I heard it is generally safe.

Many buses last route runs around midnight - 1am. You have to be familiar with the schedule, though, as some routes don't run or have very different hours on the weekends.

On the southwest side, you should be able to connect with the Lynx light rail line, which runs until 1:00 am most nights.

You can see maps and schedules on the CATS site.

I've never owned a car and have been in Charlotte for over 2 years, live near the Southpark Mall where there's access to 5 different bus routes. (also ride a bike around here & it's a safe, walkable area with easy access to lots of shopping/stores/restaurants/movies/medical offices & of course, the Southpark Mall.) I don't take the Lynx Rail that often but very experienced taking the buses & familar with the best Charlotte areas to live without a car.

Don't have time to add a lot more here right now but feel free to PM me for more info or to ask questions. Let us know what area your workplace will be located in. I can also give you advice about the best areas to live where you'd be walking distance to stores/grocery shopping, etc.

And here's some more links about living car-free/public transportation:
