It seems as if newcomers are divided into two groups. The first group are the intelligent, educated ones that researched Charlotte before moving here. They probably even visited to ensure it was the place which they definately wished to relocate on a long term basis. They ensured that the affairs (employment, financial and residential) were secured. They are the ones that generally love their new homes and are secure. They enjoy the development of Charlotte into a great place and all it has to offer.

Then, there was the other group of the less intelligent and less educated that wanted to move. They spent no time researching or bothering to learn anything about the area. They move here with very little money, little to no job prospects, and no means to return back home if things didn't work out. They are stuck as a result of their being irresponsible. Most of these individuals lived most of their lives in one town or city. They move and the first time they face situations are uncomfortable, undesirable, or don't get the job for which the applied and want to go back home to their familiar enviornment. They don't adapt well or often don't have self-confidence. They have no desire to assmilate and have likely failed to obtain a friend to help them through a precarious time . Instead, they blame the city for their woes. They don't look at their personal situation realistically and realize that it is likely their own fault. The truth is that the city is a great place and they just aren't intelligent have avoided their undesirable situation resulting from their unresearched relocation. It might also be likely that individuals in this group were former strong union workers which can be a kiss of death around these parts when attempting to get a job. Charlotte seeks smart people that don't mind working hard. These people also don't generally understand recession and economic hard times.

I fall into your first group so I guess I'm more "intelligent"?

Anyhoo, knowing this through experience (which is the best barometer), you do make some good points that if you are going to move somewhere, you have to give it a chance and the reasons for moving have to be more than just "financial", otherwise in my mind its very difficult to make things work.

Having said that, up until 2007, people could move to the area and find work w/relative ease, but those days are long gone....
