With Easter approaching I would like to make some grain pies. Does anyone know if there is anywhere around Charlotte to buy the wheat for the pies?
Thanks!

Okay, I have to ask...what is a grain pie?

Nevermind--I googled it. Sounds delicious, but it's a new one on me.

+1

I had my wife ask her mother in rural MA who used to work in a pie shop - even she did not know.

Default Grain pie

I have never heard of it but we make Italian traditional fare for Easter. We make a similar pie to the grain pie but just ricotta and sugar no berries! It is delicious!

Not really buttermilk. I would say it is like italian cheesecake (made with ricotta, not cream cheese) with pearls of wheat added. Yes, it is an Italian custom to have them for Easter. I am from NYC and everyone there is familiar with them. My grandmother made them every year. You cannot go in to a bakery around Easter time without seeing them. I'm guessing that no one here knows where to get basket cheese for a meat pie (pizza rustica/pizzagaina) either?
