I'm guessing that no one here knows where to get basket cheese for a meat pie (pizza rustica/pizzagaina) either?
Someone who speaks my lauguage, lol! I've been going through some of my moms old recipes & came across her pizzagraina & pizzarustica recipes. Also her Sweet Bread (had dried citron fruits in it) & Finger Cookies (glazed, usually with a lemony flavor & colored nonparriels) that she make every Easter. I'm guessing the Italian Deli in Cornelius might carry basket cheese, I would check there. He might even carry the grain.

BTW....does anyone in your family have a recipe for Zepolli San Giuseppe???? I'm looking for a recipe for both the dough & the custard cream with Amarena cherries in it. Sfinge, too, well actually the dough part. The filling is standard cannoli creme. I searched for them & couldn't find them.

Now I'm getting hungry, lol!!!

That's a great idea about checking with the italian deli - (I think it is Ferucci's?) Unfortunately I don't know of anyone who has the recipes for the St. Joseph pastries - I wish I did.....the sfinge is my favorite! I will check with some of my "native" italian friends back in NY to see if any of them (or their moms) have those recipes. You mentioned the finger cookies - I had forgotten about them! My grandmother must have made them from memory because there was no recipe in her recipe box for them (she just passed away a few weeks ago). I loved them when I was little! If you could forward me that recipe I would really appreciate it. Maybe we should go in to the italian cake and pastry business here.....it sounds like we would make a killing! LOL!

We have Italian Easter Meat Pie. Yummy!!!!!!!!! My aunt has always made it but she is very ill now and no one wants to take over. It is very time consuming and very expensive. She made one for every family within our family. A very special treat.

Earthfare has the grain in the bins. I believe they call it hard winter wheat also known as wheat berries. I bought some the other day & it was delicious & fresh. There's a recipe for wheatberry pudding on eatingwell.com & it tastes reminscent of a cannoli!

Wow! Making one for every family.....that had to be ALOT of work! You are right about it being very expensive as well. My grandmother made it up until her last Easter with us, last year. I don't know if I can make it as good as hers, but I am going to give it a try!

No, but I do know where you can get hoop cheese and a moon pie.

Default meat pies

We make them too and use the really good prosciutto. We decorate them too. We bake all day long on Good Friday and make about 14 meat pies and 10 ricotta pies. My parents have been doing it since I was a baby..30 yrs!

I will see if I can find some pics....it is our biggest tradition!

I have to say, being a pizza lover, I would love to see some pics of the meat pies... I already Googled the recipes (I am a man and am the 'cook' in our family).
