Been here in Charlotte over 12 years, originally from the NY City area. Tried most of the Italian restaurants and pizza places recommended by others. When I first moved down here, Pizza Hut kept winning the "Best Pizza in Charlotte" awards.
Now -
Best NY style pizza is Hawthorne' NY Pizza at the corner of 7th and Hawthorne, near the Presby Hospital uptown. They have a decent menu for other choices as well. Just expanded the menu from just pizza.
Second choice would be Brooklyn Pizza, corner of Rea Rd and Colony Rd.
For real Italian food - Fontanella's Italian Restaurant in Matthews in the Matthews Festival Shopping Center. Also have a great lunch buffet. All you can eat Italian food and they do not skimp on the meals.
Portofino's on Park Road is also good.
If you like family style Italian you should try Bucca di Beppo in Pineville. It's fantastic.
Loved the spot! Except, don't order the spaghetti and meatball dinner. Huge meatball ( I mean softball size) but no flavor whatsoever. Great family restaurant, but no 5 star type of eatery. But great place. Kids loved it. Prices moderate to expensive depending on what you like.
Hey guys
well someone we know recommended this italian pizza/pasta place Anzi restaurant...it is in the Stonecreek shopping center and they are from LI NY wow it was delicious....
Just wanted to share with everyone and their prices are really good!!!
I got hungry reading all the threads about Pizza. We are originally from Maryland, relocated to Union County last year. During one of our daily excursions we found ourselves in the middle of this quaint little Antique town of Waxhaw....and it was lunchtime. We found a little italian restaurante named Mama Lena's and decided to try our luck. We like italian food and have been to our share of pizzeria's, trottoria's, etc. This little gem is not a chain and the ambience of the inside alone speaks of homecooked meals. It is family-owned and....(I'm getting hungry again...LOL) the food is outrageously yummy. The son still owns this little restaurante and just by looking at all the family photos in the place will make you feel at home. They are the most warm and welcoming people we have ever had the pleasure of meeting and they will do anything to make your visit pleasant. We have had their pizzas and they are to die for. Their pasta dishes are well.....you'd just have to try it for yourself. We went there for dinner one night with friends and when one of us wanted to try a fish dish made with chicken instead it was done. And it was yummy. In fact, the cook wanted to add it to their menu.
If you want to try "the little italian place down the street", I suggest to try Mama Lena's Restaurante in Waxhaw. It's a nice change in the "food chain" industry and you will feel like you're in your own kitchen. Enjoy cause I'm going there right now.

Are you sure you're not a food critic? Lovely piece. I can't wait to get to Waxhaw to try it.
Warden - Thank you for the compliment...maybe I should try being a food critic. The only problem is that I'm not an expert...I just know what I like. My father worked for the Fresno Bee in Fresno, CA many years ago so maybe I just happened to pick up a few writing pointers...but that's all. If I find a place that impresses me I have no problem with recommendations. However, if I DON'T like the place...I will give the place one chance to redeem themselves...if the don't then that's the last time I go and I will pass on the bad ratings. Again...thank you very much for the compliment. Hope you like Mama Lena's...haven't had a bad meal there yet. Manja!!!!
