You'll find horror stories about both if you look, but I've had accounts at both (past: checking & savings at Wachovia; current: checking, savings, mortgage, credit card at BofA). Never had any problems with either of them. I believe their fees are pretty similar and both offer free checking. Disclaimer: I work for one of the banks now, and worked for the other one several years ago.
So, IMHO, it's really a toss-up...which one is closer to your house and/or job?
Also, if you want to steer clear of the big banks, there are several credit unions in the area that you can join. Charlotte Metro Credit Union allows anyone who lives or works in Mecklenburg county to join. There are a few others that have fairly relaxed requirements as well. Might be a better option if you want more personal service.
Also, you might consider BB&T . . . I have banked w/ all three you mentioned and have often wondered if I should find out more about The Charlotte Metro Credit Union, as well.
I would do what Jennej suggested and consider the bank most convenient to where I live, or that has branches/ATMs at place I frequent and/or travel to . . . and see which one has a free checking account that offers the benefits I need.
I really think they all are about the same, LOL. The Credit Union may be different . . . and frankly, I think Brian's suggestion is good for investments . . . except I would suggest what my g/mother did - cash in a coffee can in the back yard, Hee Hee.

Oh, Gosh, Cyn . . . I didn't factor my deteriorating memory into this equation, LOL! Maybe I will have to devise a "treasure map" and give copies of it to family members who are young and can remember where they put the map.
I am a National Bank COnvert - had Wachovia 9 years, BOF 8 months, then State Employee's Credit Union. The Credit Union Rocks, althought it's technology is dated!

Bury it in Tupperware, it'll stay fresher longer & won't get moldy, LOL!
