actually, charlotte is significantly bigger than portland.
Sorry, but that's not true at all. Metro Charlotte has just a little over 1.5 million people, while metro Portland has over 2.1 million people. And I'm sure anyone who has ever visited both places can attest that Portland is a much larger place.

I remember way before this they merge over a bank that I use to deal with and I cannot think of it but it help their presence in North Carolina.
That's absolutely correct. FTU bought Wach but kept the Wach name.

Thanx, CC!!! I was trying to remember if it was built as NationsBank or not. I used to love driving to the airport and seeing the "new" bank building looming right in front of me. I have always found that building's architecture so appealing . . .

It only took one big time layoff each for DH and I at the same bank in Southern CA for us to learn to stay away from employment in banking, unless we're desperate! It is just too volatile of an industry. Back then we worked at corporate HQ which housed 12,000 employees. The President who then took over as CEO ran the bank down to the ground to the point of takeover by then Great Western who then got taken over by WaMu. Who knows where WaMu would be going now, and both our pensions have transfered over twice. Sad for a 100 year old + company that was doing so well then, one with so much history it had its own float at the Rose Parade.
Okay. I thought one of the banks here in CLT bought Fleet. Now there was another bank that was also bought up . . . I think Merchants Bank was bought out and then ended up w/ BofA, LOL.

There are rumors about JP Morgan and Wachovia, yes? I can't imagine JP Morgan buying anyone out right now . . . but if they did . . . I sure would be surprised if they kept operations in CLT.

I personally think if Wachovia is bought out . . . they may be history here in CLT, except for some servicing personnel.

Yes, BOA bought Fleet. I remember it because Fleet had only bought my local bank out a year or so before that.

The weird thing could be, is that some medium-sized bank could come out of the woodwork and end up merging with Wachovia. Stranger things have happened!

Just such a volatile time . . . thinking about stockholders. Can't imagine they are ready for another buy out, but then, I am no expert, LOL.

I am watching Wachovia w/ great interest, altho I am not a stockholder.

Oh well, maybe this will give Ken Thompson a chance to put his hat in at the take over bank.

I can see these banks dumping Charlotte, afterall they are outsouring jobs, especially wachovia.
