The other day as my husband and I were leaving to see his female doctor, he said that he has noticed that I always dress more carefully when we go to his female physician than when we go to his male physicians. He feels that, in general, Charlotte women dress for other women rather than for men. Do the rest of you agree? Don't say that women dress for themselves - of course they do. But beyond that who do women in Charlotte dress for? other women? or for men?

Well, I suppose it depends on one's age/marital status, etc.

I know I always dressed for other women, but I was a married mom with children in school.

Well, I grew up in the "Dress for Success" era, wh/ meant business suits, business casual . . . jeans were for hiking, LOL. Business casual integrated w/ County Club casual and was basically "Prep." The industries I worked in were dominated by males, and the message I got was . . . dressing to fit in w/ the men in the sense of "seriously professional." Elegant, polished, tailored, carefully accessorized - even on the golf course.

So whoever "Success" is . . . that is who I was dressing for.

Now I dress for fun - my own!

Back in the late 80's when I lived in NJ, I used to fly USAir / Piedmont frequently and would connect planes in Charlotte quite often.

One thing I really enjoyed about this was walking through the terminal at CLT and seeing all of the ladies wearing dresses and looking so natural in their attire. I don't mean the businesspeople, but more the vacationers, casual travelers, and people at the airport to meet travelers (ie - family).

This look was in sharp contrast to the attire worn by the folks back at Newark airport (sweats, stretch pants, jogging suits, etc).

This is hard to describe as a guy and I may not be saying it in the right terminology. (I'm not trying to knock NY/NJ; just making an observation.)

Good answer! I can relate to that one being on the oposite side of the spectrum.

O.K. I am a male and we are from Venus, right? But, I think that my wife dresses for the situation more than anything else. She is an educator and dresses in a manner that is appropriate for that profession. When she was a retail executive several years ago, she dressed as a businesswoman with more fashion consciousness as she was in the apparel industry. I really don't think that she dresses for men, I hope (other than me). By the way, I buy lots of her clothes during Christmas and other times of giving and she is lucky because I tend to have expensive tastes. I like Ann Taylor. The clothes there seem to fit her so well. Honest! I'm not gay.

I dress for my self and according to my mood, but given the fact that I am Venezuelan I must admit that image/look is an important part of our culture. Specially for business people or successful professional.
