Hi!
We are a family of 5 in MA who will be relocating to the Charlotte area soon. We were hoping to be there by now but some health issues with our daughter put a wrinkle in our plans.

My husband's job is in the "North Charlotte" area which I understand is the Eastern part of the city? We want a decent commute but more importantly great community with good schools. My other two big concerns are support for special needs students and proximity to a good hospital.

We have been told by our realtor Waxhaw, Marvin and to some degree Matthews are our best bet. I prefer to be out of the city proper but Ballantyne is another area he has mentioned. Our budget is under $450k.

Our 11 year old daughter has complex medical issues and on a 504, misses a ton of school and needs a supportive environment. She is smart as a whip and in the mainstream classroom. So while everyone looks at "the best schools" I need to find the best school for her.

What do you think of Waxhaw? Other places you might suggest?

TIA

North Charlotte is not in the eastern part of the city.

If your husband is commuting every day to "North Charlotte" I would stay away from Waxhaw unless he wants an hour or more commute each way.

Sorry to say but my suggestion would be to get another realtor. I would suggest coming to Charlotte and seeing for yourself how you feel about the schools, commute, etc.

The only reasonable recommendation that your realtor made was Matthews. Concord or Huntersville might work for you.

I would tend to agree with this. Let me guess...the realtor's office is in Ballantyne?

Although is the job location near UNC Charlotte? I guess that area is technically "North Charlotte" but it is a little to the east. It wouldn't be an ideal commute from Marvin/Waxhaw and there are other good areas closer (Harrisburg, parts of Concord, etc.), but it should be under an hour at least.

Levine Children's Hospital, a part of Carolinas Healthcare, is the best children's hospital in the area. It is located in the Dilworth / Myers Park area of Charlotte outside of Uptown. They have branch offices, but the ER is located at the flagship campus in Dilworth / Myers Park. Not sure if your daughter needs to have access to an ER though or just a medical office that treats your daughter.

There are plenty of nice areas closer to North Charlotte that make more sense for the job like Concord, Harrisburg, Huntersville, etc... sounds like your realtor lives / specializes in the Ballantyne area though and wants to stay in his / her comfort zone.

Jeff Gordon Children's is also up in Concord at Northeast and, while it doesn't have the same reputation as LCH, shares a lot of resources with LCH as part of CHS and is starting a lot of quality initiatives that will be fully implemented over the next few years.

Agree with all of the above, look at Concord and Kannapolis, Harrisburg, Rocky River, etc. Your money might go further, too.

If you're saying "North Charlotte" but might be in the East, do you have an address?...or if you don't want to give specifics, an address two streets over after looking on MapQuest? Wells Fargo has a large center called "CIC" up in the "University Area" (near UNC Charlotte) that fits that description. If that's the case, I'd look at Matthews, Mint Hill too, (along with other areas North/Northeast of the city mentioned above)...but not Ballantyne...That's getting a bit too far west for you. "Waxhaw" is fine, though it's a very large area...I'd stick to the northern section of Waxhaw within 5-10 minutes of I-485 off Providence Rd.

If the location is further up near Huntersville, then I definitely would look for a place north of the city. And if it's up near Concord, then same thing...look for a job up in that area.

I have a much younger sister (I'm 38, she's 15) who also has some serious health issues (cerebral palsy, seizures) and she's been to both Levine and Jeff Gordon Childrens hospital over the years. They are both really good and would be fairly easily accessed from the Harrisburg area with JGCH being the closer of the two. There is plenty of housing in your price point there as well.

I agree that it sounds like your realtor is just showing you the area they know best and not really listening to what you need.

Ballantyne & Waxhaw will be a long commute for your husband if he is working in the north of the city. Do you know where is he going to located? Do you have a street name? There are plenty of good of medical facilities in the area so you should be able to find one that suits your needs. The 504 will be fine with the schools. One of my own children has a 504. Harrisburg, Concord are good suggestions again if you could give more information about the location of your husbands job you will be able to get more comprehensive advice on areas that will meet your family's needs.

Hi
Thanks for the replies. I am definitely getting pushed away from Concord by both him and the realtor. I don't know. His job is in the Yorkmount neighborhood of Charlotte. I am not sure if that's east, west, north or south.

My daughter is in intestinal failure and dependent on parenteral nutrition. She has a GI motility specialist in Boston we will continue to travel up here to see periodically but need a local GI (among other things). He has a colleague he wants us to see at UNC hospital. I know that's not a children's hospital. Not sure which location he is at. We are used to traveling an hour to 90 minutes now for doctors appointments. But does UNC have a good reputation overall? For pediatrics?

Thank you!
