We are planning to move to Waxhaw area due to change in our job situation. We have a son (going to be Junior) and a daughter (going to 7th Grade). Both of them plays Basketball. My job will be in Charlotte and my wife office will be in Ballantyne. One of the important criteria is academic performance. Could you please let me know which school is better and to get into that school where should I reside? I noticed that some of the Waxhaw homes are in Cuthbertson School area and some are in Marvin Ridge. That is a big change for me. In NJ, all students from same town go to same school. Any help is appreciated.

The Waxhaw zip code 28173 covers a number of villages as well as unincorporated Union County. You can't go by zip code as you can up north.

Search this forum for Union County schools. You'll find as many opinions as there are houses.

Keep in mind that there's a 99% chance that school assignments are changing for the 2014-15 school year. If you don't ask your real estate agent that specific question (where will this neighborhood go to school next year), you may not get a straight answer.

My honest advice... don't move to Union County. The political environment is a complete mess and kids/families are the ones paying the price for a bunch of egotistical power hungry lunatics making power plays.

If you do decide to move down here, buy in a neighborhood directly across the street from the school you choose because redistricting is in the DNA of UC.

Good luck.

If you just google search "Union County redistricting maps", the first few links will show you the proposed redistricting. Marvin Ridge high school appears to have the least amount of movement. A lot of Cuthbertson was redistricted to Parkwood, so be careful there.

If you don't want to deal with the risks, you can also look for Ardrey Kell High School in Mecklenburg County...especially in the areas around Rae Rd.

you will meet lot of people whining about the redistricting in Union County but if you do some research and make educated decision then, chances of redistricting is minimal or even with redistricting you will fall in one of the so called high ranked school. You might have to spend little bit more money and stay close to boarder of Union and Mecklenburg county. if you take intersection of New Town and twelve mile creek road and concentrate northwest you are certain to fall in one of the high ranked school. Believe me, it is still large option for housing compare to Southern mecklenburg county where it has more and more commercial appeal than residential. however it also depends on your personal choice. But my advice would be look the school boundary line map closely to see the orientation of the school and it's map. more south you go (or East) it gets cheaper with shiny amenities but you have to use your common sense and ask question WHY. Some people made that mistake but still would not admit and blame County.

You can't compare Waxhaw to Marvin. Marvin is probably 1.5X-2X more expensive than "Waxhaw". As EX-LI said 28173 covers a lot of ground.

The "safest" spot in all of Union County would be the upper northeast quadrant around Firethorne and Marvin Creek. Even that has its issues with a proposed development with a movie theater.

AK has about 2800 students and will go up next year. To say there is no risk is a bit of a stretch especially given CMS history. Just talk to people in Providence CC.

Sports by the way are very, very competitive at all of the schools you are interested in. Be prepared to compete. There are no guarantees. AK has one of the best boys and girls bball programs in state and people transfer out to get playing time. In Union County, Weddington has the best bball program.

Will you actually be working out in Waxhaw? What exactly is your job situation?

Welcome to the area. And don't worry about the schools. UCPS has a great countywide school system and your child will thrive in any school in the district.

Not to Highjack the thread, but my only point on AK is where are they going to go? The very west side (Ballantyne Elementary area) might get redistricted to South Meck. But anywhere near Rae Rd at worst would move to Providence High, and that would be an even move.

There are more than a few that don't want to get moved to South Meck or to Providence. The apartment growth is off the charts in AK. CLT keeps filling in every open spot in Ballantyne with an apartment complex or mixed use.

Redistricting is redistricting.

Just look at the outrage in UC. People are fighting getting moved out of MR to Weddington or Cuthbertson.
