WSOC did not do their homework. All of the EnergyUnited areas in Mecklenburg have had this for over a year now. (mostly Lake Norman area) They slapped a smart meter on our home (no choice in the matter) in 2011. Now we can log on to their website and look at daily electricity usage.

Big Whoop.

The meter also blasts out a heavy amount of RF every few seconds so it can send your usage information to antennae installed every ~1/4 mile on the street. They put these antennas all over Huntersville which are connected together by some new fiber network which took them over a year to install. Mecklenburg was one of the last EnergyUnited areas to get this service. They have had it north of here for a lot longer.

IMO, the power company likes it because they can fire all the meter readers.

WSOC did do a bad job, but it was in explaining what this is a pilot program for. This is monitoring gas, electricity, water, & sewage, not just electricity. While you are correct that these will not be the first smart meters in the area, they are the first multi-functional smart meters. Do you think that Concord would send people to Kings Mountain if they could just go next door?

You might have tried asking a question instead of cloaking people with stupidity. These are utility-providing municipalities. They can re-purpose those people.

Ahh, yes.

RF radiation, which is perfectly fine. Just as GMO foods are perfectly fine.

Gee...other nations around the world ban ingredients that Americans consume.

We live in a nice, neat, clean, sanitary, "green" environment.

Yet I recently read that one out of every three Americans will contract some form of cancer during their lives.

Record numbers of seniors have some form of dementia.

Global warming perhaps?

Back to reality: "...the Governor of the State of Connecticut, signed a proclamation declaring May 2010 as Electromagnetic Sensitivity (EMS) Awareness Month in Connecticut. As stated in the proclamation , people in Connecticut and throughout the world have developed Electromagnetic Sensitivity (EMS) as a result of global electromagnetic pollution."

"Electromagnetic Sensitivity (EMS) is a painful chronic illness of hypersensitivities reactions to electromagnetic radiation for which there is no known cure. The symptoms of EMS include dermal changes, acute numbness and tingling, dermatitis, flushing, arrhythmia, muscular weakness, tinnitus, malaise, gastric problems, nausea, visual disturbances, severe neurological, respiratory, speech problems and numerous other physiological symptoms."
