Bobcats owner Michael Jordan said in an Observer interview earlier this month that he was receptive to considering a name change to the Hornets, should the Bensons give up that name.
“It’s definitely an interest down the road, but right now it’s the New Orleans Hornets,” Jordan told the Observer. “We would definitely entertain the opportunity. That’s as much as we can say right now. We’ve heard the community ask the question, and we would listen.”
I for one would welcome the change, let's hope the new found success on the floor will keep up (so they don't have to find a new market that can sustain this team)!
I would love to see the name go back to the "Hornets". For starters, it would finally get rid of the Bob Johnson era here in town, where he alienated the fan base.
Secondly, the "Hornets" name has historical reference to the Charlotte area. During the Revolutionary War, General Cornwallis of Britain said fighting in Charlotte was like "fighting a bunch of hornets". Also, if you look at the badge of a CMPD officer, there is a hornets nest on it.
We would still have the hornets here if they would have sold the coliseum to George Shinn. What about the tens of thousands who lost millions on buying HORNET PSLs? They cant bring that name back.
The Bobcats are better. It took a while, but the Bobcats grew on me and Hornets has faded. I like the orange. It's bright, and the logo is much more sophisticated and modern.
Bobcats remind me of the "New Charlotte" ... I like new Charlotte better than the Hornets era CLT

The issue wasn't the hornets wanting to but the coliseum. It was the fact that the team wanted a brand new arena....shinn and woolridge consulted experts around the country to ask for advice. The consensus was that the team should ask for public assisstance of no more than 40-50% qnd pay for the rest themselves. The team then went before the city council and told the city that they EXPECTED the city to pay for the entire arena. The arguement for the new arena was that there were not enough corporate boxes available and that they needed a new arena that would have more boxes available. The owners then went to Louisville and Memphis about relocating before deciding on New Orleans.

Before Shinn wanted a new arena, Shinn wanted to buy the Coliseum (early 90's).

And yes....no PSLs were involved with the hornets.
