Kobe Bryant was drafted #13 in the first round of the 1996 NBA Draft. Seems like Charlotte traded away Kobe, to what team and for what player?

Google is your friend. This took me about 20 secs to come up with:

The first guard to ever be taken out of high school, Bryant was chosen as the 13th overall draft pick by the Charlotte Hornets in 1996. According to Arn Tellem, Bryant's agent at the time, Bryant playing for the Charlotte Hornets was "an impossibility". However, Bill Branch, the Hornets' head scout at the time, said that the Hornets agreed to trade their draft selection to the Lakers before picking Bryant. The teams agreed to the trade the day before the draft and the Lakers did not tell the Hornets who to select until five minutes before the pick was made. Branch said that prior to the trade agreement, the Hornets never even considered drafting Bryant. Prior to the draft, Bryant had worked out in Los Angeles, in which he scrimmaged against former Lakers players Larry Drew and Michael Cooper, and according to then-Laker manager Jerry West "marched over these people". On July 1, 1996, West traded his starting center, Vlade Divac, to the Hornets in exchange for Bryant's draft rights...

I was working at a TV station in Philly at the time. This was the hottest story in town for that entire school year.

The short version - Kobe's dad, "Jellybean" Joe worked for the Sixers. Kobe had been groomed by the that team & others since he was a toddler. Joe & his wife knew 2 things. Kobe was going to college, then play for the Sixers. The Lakers found out about him & sent scouts who promised him the moon.

The family battle played out in the local press via weekly high school sports shows. This was no more of a rags to riches story than Will Smith.

how is it rags to riches if Kobe's Dad played in the NBA for 4 years and over in Europe for 7?

I'm not saying Kobe was raised with a silver spoon in his mouth but he had a spoon and it wasn't rusty. LOL

apologies if I read it wrong.

Reread that sentence. I said no more rags to riches than Will Smith. Will Smith was not from the hood. He was raised in Overbrook, which is a darned nice middle class neighborhood. I worked on the edge of Overbrook for quite a few years. Kobe graduated from Lower Merion which is nicer still.

People who don't have personal experience with those areas don't know. Since you lived in Philly briefly I thought that you had probably heard that Will Smith had graduated from Overbrook High, which also draws from a rough area.

The key to the whole Kobe thing is all in his genes. His father was a pro & his mother's brother was a pro. Joe Bryant - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Chubby Cox - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia . The Lakers used the Hornets. That's Charlotte's connection.

I had some friends in the music industry who knew Will Smith before he blew up.. they said he was a jerk/prankster.

A friend said he would pull up to a crowded corner in West Philly and call you over to the car and then drive off laughing.

I wasn't familiar with the High Schools and their reputations in Philly...
